Potable water

Onboard water distribution systems can harbour many potential human health hazards.

Our test kit enables ship staff to monitor the quality of the drinking water on board the ship. The range of tests can be used on the ship either as a standalone control solution or as a supplement to laboratory analysis, dependent on flag state guidelines.

Here’s what our test kits will reveal:

1. Water chemistry

Evaluate sample pH, minerals and other elements such as copper, iodine and iron. Detection is based on colorimetry (color) and turbidimetry (particles).

2. Microbiology

Analyse the microbiological characteristics of the water, including coliform bacteria and Enterococci.

Further analyses will reveal the quantity of bacteria. The result is then compared with a table to see if the sample falls within the acceptable range as defined by regulatory authorities.

Legionella pneumophila

The Legionella bacteria is part of the microbiology category, but deserves special attention.
Colonies typically form in stagnant water at room temperature. You should test for legionella:

Before embarking on a journey, particularly in hotspots for stagnant water.
In the event of a suspected outbreak.

Discharged water: Testing for environmental harm

We’re not only interested in the quality of the water we consume, but also the water we discharge. The main processes that generate water discharge are ballast water and sewage treatment.

Ballast water

Make sure no living organisms are discharged from your ship. By testing the ballast water, you learn whether your ballast water treatment system (BWTS) functions properly.
Our test kit detects living microorganisms such as Vibrio cholera. It also reveals the presence of small marine animals like crabs and crustaceans.

Test kit for sewage and grey water

Before being flushed out to sea, sewage and other effluents pass through treatment plants. Their job is to minimise particle count and microbiological activity.

We offer a designated test kit for sewage water. It allows you to verify the efficacy of your onboard treatment plants. While the test kit detects many of the same elements as other water testing kits (PH, salts, minerals), it also measures oxygen levels. This will tell you a lot about the level of certain bacteria (aerobic bacteria consume oxygen).

Engine cooling systems and boilers

Water is a critical element for processes on board, like engine cooling and pressure boiling.
Because water in closed systems constantly interacts with metals, it gets treated with anti-corrosive and anti-scaling substances. You test process water to ensure the desired properties are retained.
